The Benefits of Cloning Essay -- essays research papers fc

The Benefits of Cloning Imagine having a twin that looks and acts exactly like you. Even more interesting this twin is a product of scientific cloning. If scientists have their way, identical replicas of human beings will be roaming the earth. This scientific vision may occur a lot more recent then many think. Cloning can be (better) understood by looking at it’s definition, process, and some examples. This first step to better understanding cloning is to hear precisely what it is. Cloning can be defined as an organism or group of organisms derived from another organism by an asexual reproductive process. Usually members of a clone are identical in genes (Clarke, 1). Even though the definition is relatively simple, it will be several years before these projects will be technically feasible. Many species are being considered for cloning, but legal battles often halt the complex process (Grossman, 1). Knowledge of the definition of cloning helps one better understand its difficult process. The process of cloning is long and tedious and most uncommonly unsuccessful. After many years of failure to clone using adult animals, most scientists started to think it was too tough. However Ian Wilmut of the Roslin Institute in Scotland found a new successful method (World Book, 1). It should also be noted that adult males have the lowest success rate of cloning (Okimoto, 2). The actual process of cloning is due to recent advances of Genetic Engineering. Scientists can now isolate an individual gene from one organism and grow it in another organism belonging to a different species (Clarke, 1). While this is occurring a scientist can also take a cells chromosomes and nucleus, and inject them into a fertilized egg whose own nucleus has been removed (Clarke, 3). However another new process that was used to clone the worlds most famous sheep, is starting to be used more often. This new process involved taking mammary-gland cells from a sheep and starve them of growth, then electrically inject an egg which was later transplanted into a surrogate mother. Out of 300 attempts, only one survived the process, Dolly a lamb born in 1996 (Worldbook, 1). The creation of Dolly is one of only a few examples that have ended in success . Having familiarity with the process of cloning helps one understand some cloning experiments. With odds like one out of 300... ...t Type of Process 1. Isolate an individual gene from one organism and grow it in another organism belonging to a different species. 2. While this is occurring a scientist can also take a cells chromosomes and nucleus, and inject them into a fertilized egg whose own nucleus has been removed. C. New Process 1. Taking mammary-gland cells from a sheep and starve them of growth, then electrically inject an egg which was later transplanted into a surrogate mother. III. Examples A. Huia Bird 1. Once native to New Zealand but extinct for its feathers. 2. Remnants of the birds cells or bones must be found before cloning can begin. B. Woolly Mammoth 1. Larry Agenbroad a university of Northern Arizona University geologist and his team of international scientists plan to clone a Woolly Mammoth from DNA remnants. 2. The frozen animal will be flown 200 miles from Siberia to a frozen tunnel, to be studied for DNA. Concluding Statement: The science of cloning can at first be considered very frightening. However once one has a better understanding of this science through its definition, process, and some examples, one should realize that some great possibilities could occur in the future

“Let’s Talk About Sex” Documentary Essay

James Houston put together the documentary â€Å"Let’s Talk About Sex† that highlights the differences between American’s approach to sex education and that of other countries like the Netherlands. The stereotypes, controversy, and irony all related to sex is put out in the open and discussed. Throughout the film, it is obvious that America’s ways of sex education and attitude towards sex has created a negative connotation. The Europeans have a much more open approach when it comes to the discussion of sex and started sex education at an early age. American’s, on the other hand, have a very closed approach to sex discussion and save sex education for later ages. This negative connotation and approach to education has resulted in the States having much higher rates of teen pregnancy, teen birth, and sexually transmitted infections when compared to European countries. One could say that it’s time the United States changes its approach and opinions regarding sex, sexuality, and the education behind it. Throughout the movie, there was a commonality between those who held a biased opinion on the topic of sex. Those who believed abstinence should be enforced and were against an open discussion of sexual relations were often times from the older generation. It’s the parents of teens, most teachers of sex education, and even people within the churches that held a bias. They believed that teens should not be involved in sexual activities and that it should be saved for marriage. Along with that, they stood behind the idea that the teens should not be educated about sex until later in high school and the open discussion of sex and sexuality was not proper. Kelsey’s mother was one of these biased people. She was strongly against the idea of Kelsey taking part in sexual activities until she got married and did make it easy for Kelsey to openly communicate with her about her sexual relations. For those teens that do take part in sexual activities, they are looked down upon in the greater portion of American culture because of the negative connotations that have been established here in the United States. With these biases, it has put sex into a negative category not just for the minority, being the teens, but most Americans in general. In America, sex is not something people openly talk about nor is it something that teens are â€Å"suppose† to take part in. The idea of teens taking part in sexual relations prior to marriage is greatly frowned upon and the stigma of carrying a condom has scared them away from it. An example of this, which was shared in the movie, is that in the Netherlands, carrying a condom starting in their teens is very common and encouraged. Where as in the states, if a teen were to be caught with a condom, others would view that as a sign of someone who is very promiscuous. In the movie, females thought males who carried condoms wanted nothing but sex from a girl while males thought that women who carried condoms were easy and considered sluts. This negative impact in the States has generated these stereotypes surrounding sex. The effects of these stereotypes have negative outcomes. For example, if a guy is afraid to carry a condom because of the stereotype and when it comes time for him to take part in sexual activities, he won’t be properly prepared. Without the protection, he is at risk for STIs and possibility of pregnancy in girls. This is also true vice versa with girls; they too should carry condoms, but are afraid due to the negative association. There is also a negative idea behind the discussion of sex in an open setting. Most parents in the US are afraid to talk about sex with their teens sharing both their sexual lives and discussing their teens. Because the parents are not open to it, the teens are afraid to approach their parents with sex related questions or tell them they have taken part in sexual activities. Because of this, many teens go with out proper instruction and correct information in regards to sexual activities. Where as if the parents were more open and accepting of the idea of their teens taking part in sexual activities, it would open an avenue for better knowledge and maybe even help prevent STIs, pregnancies, and other sex related issues. The minority group in â€Å"Let’s Talk About Sex† stood as US teens. These teens faced the discrimination of elder groups and negative stereotypes, but throughout the course of the movie, it showed how things are slowly changing. Several people who are often viewed as community leaders are working to properly educate teens. An example was reverend Williams, who created an open area to discuss sex related things and offer proper education. Some teachers also voiced their opinion on how they believe sex ed. should be more about sexual relations and not about human anatomy. They also believe the education should begin at younger ages when kids are going through puberty and developing sexually developing. This is one way these teens are getting the upper hand on discrimination. Another is that opening the idea of family discussions about sex and the idea of teens being involved in sexual relations. Breaking the assumption that abstinence is the only answer and opening the door to discussion, using the Netherlands as an example. By the end of the movie, Kelsey, whose mother originally frowned upon sex before marriage, was able to change her mothers mind and even talk about her sexual relations. These are just a couple of the ways the teens slowly made change, there is still a lot more to be talked about and changed. When reflecting back, I too can relate to the US teens in the documentary. I have noticed the closed door in terms of the discussion of sex and human sexuality as well as the stigmas associated with teens’ involvement in sexual activities. I do believe there is something to be said about the Netherlands approach to human sexuality and sex, especially when looking at the number of teen pregnancies and transmission of STIs compared to the much larger number in the US. We, as the United States, could benefit from a change in the atmosphere surrounding teen sex, and sex in general. Sex is a natural thing.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD has been one of the most critical issues for military veterans for decades. They might not know how to react to the situation and how it can affect them in the long run. Since some of them may not know the symptoms of PTSD; therefore, they might not even know that they have PTSD. On the other hand, those who do know, might keep it to himself or herself secretly and never let anyone know about it. Later on, these symptoms start to get worse and worse and it, finally, is too late to treat these veterans. There are several treatments out there for PTSD. Therapists can use the cognitive psychology to help veterans with PTSD by using cognitive therapy. Male or Female Essay - 1392 Words

In this piece the author, Deborah Blum, explores the relationship that gender plays both in our biological make up and in society. Blum is a Pulitzer Prize recipient who is well known for her scientific journalism. Working for the Sacramento Bee Blum she has published a wide verity of pieces but is most known for her book The Poisoner’s Handbook. In this piece titled â€Å"Gender Blur† she asks the astonishing question of: do the gender roles of our culture reflect an underlying biology, and, in turn, does the way we behave influence that biology? In both of which she claims that there is evidence to support that men are more aggressive. Fo cusing on the domestic issue Blum claims that in conflicts in which a woman killed a man, he tended to be the one who had started the fight – in 51.8 percent of the cases, which is exaggerated in the text to seem much bigger. This was a very bad use of the report because this number is just about where it should be. There is no significant difference to show that men are more violent because this percentage states that men are about as aggressive, 1.8% more than expected. This detracts from the article as a whole because it distorts the actual number in an attempt to persuade readers. Blum than proceeds to give more biological support to show that testosterone enables a certain degree of aggression. She discusses the genetic makeup of humans and how flexible our physical make up is. Drug Testing in the Federal Workplace Essay example

In September 1986, President Reagan issued Executive Order 12564. This was done in an effort to make the Federal Government a drug free work place. He believed that persons who used illegal drugs were not suitable for Federal employment. The order required the heads of governmental agencies to establish both a voluntary and mandatory testing program to determine the use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions. All of these above mentioned aspects helps in monitoring the roles and responsibility of the accountant in maintaining accounting details and other important things. 3. Ways to minimize the effectiveness of the security awareness training in Henson Henson Accounting Practice Xero is a cloud based accounting software. This introduces so many vulnerabilities within the operations (Tan and Ferreira, 2012). These vulnerabilities must be reduced in order to combat the chances of threats and other situations. These can be done with the help of the security awareness training programs that must be given to the accountants and Xero users. These are as follows: Phishing: Phishing is the term that is used in order to represent the form of social engineering. This form of social engineering acquires all the confidential and personal data that is shared by the user or other important elements of any organizations (Trianico Puspaningrum, 2014). Social engineering is one model that provides the interactive module that explains the method of scanning process and methods that helps to identify the facts and other details about the user data. In contrast with this aspect, the phishing is related to the misuse or theft of these data. Privileged access: The users of accounting software have the access to rights those are consider as the general user and are allowed to visit all the details about the software or its monitoring aspects (Yilmaz, 2015). The users on that level operate the administrative levels of tasks. These data are always the sensitive data in order to consider the value of these data. This includes the cardholder data (CHD). Social engineering: Social engineering is nothing but a form of database management with consideration of the social needs (Yilmaz, 2015). This engineering introduces the employees to the common methods are that are being used for the betterment of the software development. The social engineering can attack and provides threat to the user in case of the management of databases (Ã… ½rov, 2013). However, these aspects are harmful for the developmental perspective of accounting software. Data loss prevention scanning (DLP): A process of Data loss prevention scanning is known as the technique to prevent the leakage of the confidential data from the company environment (Al Dallal, 2013). This is very important in order to maintain the data loss from the company premises. The DLP technique is helping in combatting all the significant aspects that are being managed by the organization and secure the organizational data such as accounting details and other aspects that are being utilized in the confidential background of the organization (Brink and Lee, 2015). Exact data matching is identified with the help of the DLP technique. This ensures a systematic data loss prevention technique and guides the organization in combatting the threats and problems related to data loss. 4. Possible risks offshore outsourcing of various information systems functions Several aspects are being noted as the risk factors involved in outsourcing related to the accounting software. These risks are elaborated as follows: Inadequate infrastructure: Network management is one of the important aspects within the context of organizational development (Dallal, 2013). In case of the outsourcing properties inadequate network architecture will be responsible for the maintaining the infrastructure of the organization. The inadequate infrastructure provides bad influence to the system to be demolished (Fanning, 2014). The service persons should be responsible for the development of the each task and they must develop their responsibility according to the needs of infrastructure. The system should be designed in such a way that they have the optimized structure and manages all the details of the accounting vendors. Antiquated communication infrastructure: In case of the information system function, the communication is very important aspect that must be prioritized in order to maintain the structure of the organizational culture with respect to the outsourcing (Ghiorzy Varela Parente, 2012). There are specific services that have to be provided by the organization, these are traditional voice facility to the long distant users, facilities should be provided to the regional corporate sites in order to combat all the disorders related to the risk assessments. In addition to his, the public data networks must also be maintained in order to combat the threats and other threats affecting these networks (Humphrey and Beard, 2014). The regional cost will be reduced in this case as the issues are resolved. Operational risks: Any kind of technical task involves operational risks within the processes. Support to the organizational data can be diminished for operational risks. This manages the core business operational information that is very crucial for making the organizational data and information confidential (Krishnan and Wang, 2014). Typical task involves more risk factors within the context than the general cases. Database administration and other important aspect are hampered by this risk. Therefore, it is clear that the operational risks damages the entire system environment and other important aspects within the organization. Poorly designed development tools: Poorly designed development tools are harmful in case of the designing of the accounting software set up (Lin and Beck, 2012). These effects the contextual aspect related to the effectiveness of the accounting details of the organization. Each and every platform of business are hampered for this risk.
